Thoughts: Whose side is God on?

Often the brutal mullahs in Iran kill, torture and abuse because they believe they are doing God's bidding. But in light of the fact that they have no direct confirmation from God that their interpretation of religion are correct, how is it that they are so sure that God is on their side?
